In 1946 the Phalanx was established at Stout as a local social fraternity. On November 20, 1948, the Phalanx became the Alpha Kappa Chapter of the national Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity. The aims of the fraternity are to provide suitable entertainment for members and to promote good fellowship among members of the student body. The records consist primarily of newspaper clippings detailing the activities of the fraternity as well as achievements of individual members. Also included are congratulatory letters and telegrams sent in 1948 when the fraternity became a national affiliate and miscellaneous materials including correspondence relating to national affiliation, 1950 Pre-Prom Dinner Menu, and a copy of their newsletter, "The Pledge".
